The Liberty Protection Safeguards: preparing for implementation
Published:
Explore the background to the new Liberty Protection Safeguards, why the new framework has come about, and the roles and responsibilities of people working in different roles across health and social care.
The Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act 2019 sets in place a new framework to authorise deprivations of liberty in England and Wales: the Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS). Unlike the existing legislation, it applies to 16 and 17 year olds as well as to adults, bringing new responsibilities for people working with young people.
The webinar explores the background to the LPS and why the new framework has come about. The roles and responsibilities under the LPS system of people working in different roles across health and social care will also be explained, as well as the key changes the LPS bring about for social care practice.
Alex Ruck Keene, who is an expert in mental capacity law and was a consultant to the Law Commission project that led to the Liberty Protection Safeguards, will lead the session. He will provide an overview of the key messages for implementation and outlines tasks that can support organisations to prepare for the LPS.
