Supporting the sector

We have worked collaboratively with individual organisations, as well as local and national partnerships, to deliver learning and development opportunities across 2019-20.

Supporting the sector

We work collaboratively with individual organisations, as well as local and national partnerships, to deliver learning and development opportunities.

Practice Supervisor Development Programme

We were appointed to deliver the Practice Supervisor Development Programme (PSDP), a significant investment by the Department for Education that aims to provide high-quality continuous professional development for social workers taking up their first role in which they are responsible for supporting and developing the practice of others.

The programme is due to enter its third phase of delivery in 2020, offering more places for practice supervisors with up to five years’ experience. PSDP aims to build confidence, mobilise academic knowledge and practice expertise, and support the sector to invest in supervision as a key lever for high quality reflective practice. As part of the programme’s development, open access resources have been produced to support practice supervisors in key aspects of their role. The materials draw on research and practice evidence, as well as learning from the lived experience of children and families.

Tackling Child Exploitation Support Programme

The Tackling Child Exploitation (TCE) Support Programme aims to support local areas to develop an effective strategic response to child exploitation and threats from outside the family home (known as extra-familial harm). This covers child sexual exploitation and child criminal exploitation, including county lines drug trafficking.

Aimed at local area partnerships with safeguarding responsibilities, the programme is designed to provide extra support so that local areas can review and develop their strategic approach to safeguarding children and young people. As part of the programme's work, an online resource aims to support cross-sector leaders achieve system change and provide a cross-cutting understanding of exploitation that encourages strategic change from multiple vantage points.

Train the Trainer Supervisor Development Programme

We are working with the Department of Health and Social Care and Skills for Care to deliver a national Train the Trainer – Supervisor Development Programme (ttSDP). Aims of the programme include enabling high-quality learning and ensuring that there are skilled trainers in each local area to support Practice Supervisors.

Social Work Organisational Resilience Diagnostic

We have been delighted to work in partnership with Professor Gail Kinman and Dr Louise Grant at the University of Bedfordshire on the Social Work Organisational Resilience Diagnostic (SWORD) workbook.

The online workbook offers evidence-informed approaches to support building organisational strengths and provides a range of tasks and strategies to help foster the conditions to better support the wellbeing of social workers. At each stage of development, the underpinning model, and the diagnostic tool and workbook, were co-produced with groups of social workers, line managers and leaders.

Nuffield Family Justice Observatory

We have been working with the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory which aims to improve the use of data and research evidence in the family justice system in England and Wales. Following a national scoping study, the Nuffield Foundation appointed a Development Team to take forward the findings and build the essential infrastructure to enable the launch of the observatory in 2019.

Research and evaluation

In the last year we have supported Children’s and Adults Services, local authorities, charities and third sector organisations; conducting research in local communities, charities, third sector organisations, and in prisons. We are providing research support for leading academics in the sector on projects which are exploring the nature of serious cases in social care where safeguarding reviews have been completed. In addition, we are working with Cornwall Council to evaluate the Community Development Worker programme; a locality-based partnership between the voluntary sector and Cornwall Council working to identify and strengthen community resources which support children and families across Cornwall.
