Upcoming CPD sessions for PSW Networks

Published: 21/11/2023

Alison Domakin, Senior Research and Development Officer at Research in Practice, outlines the topics we'll cover in upcoming CPD sessions for PSW Networks.

We are pleased to announce the topics for the next series of PSW Networks CPD sessions. In choosing the focus for each session, we have been guided by your responses about which issues you would find useful to explore further.

We have also drawn on the expertise of a range of facilitators to present the sessions, who can speak from lived experience, academic research perspectives and practice leadership roles.

In the first session on 7 December, we will be reflecting on the importance of professional values in leadership, before moving on to hear from practice leaders actively engaged in embedding anti-racism within their organisations and in practice on 5 February. This will be followed by a session on 13 March, in which practice leaders will share how they are embedding  anti-racist supervision in their organisations.

The session on 1 May provides an opportunity to think about the 'co-production sandwich' as a starting point and think about what this means for your day-to-day work with people and families.

The last two sessions will focus again on different aspects of practice leadership. On 10 June we will consider how practice leaders can empower and influence others when leading change initiatives. The last session on 17 September will provide an opportunity to jointly consider how to exercise the role and responsibilities of a Principal Social Worker, dealing with conflict and what it means to be an authentic leader.

As always, there will be plenty of time to engage in discussion and networking with peers during the events.

We hope that you will find the sessions useful.

To book your place on any of these sessions, please see the PSW bulletin for booking links or contact pswnetworks@researchinpractice.org.uk.

10:00-12:00, 7 December 2023

Professor Robin Miller, University of Birmingham, will discuss embedding professional values at the core of leadership, presenting findings from his recent research on adaptive leadership (which the PSW networks contributed to).

The session will provide an opportunity to reflect on the role of values in leadership and how practice leaders communicate their values within the organisation and wider network.

Please note: This session builds on previous input to the PSW Networks by Professor Miller.

14:00-16:00, 5 February 2024

In this session you will hear directly from four practice leaders with a specific remit to promote anti-racist practice in children and family and adult services in Essex and Hackney, who will share learning from their experience of developing of anti-racist practice within organisations and how they would like to see anti-racist practice develop further.  You will be challenged to consider how anti-racist practice might be strengthened in your organisation.

This session will be facilitated by:

  • Deborah Barnett (Anti-racist Strategic Lead for Hackney Children and Education directorate) and Lisa Aldridge (Head of Service Safeguarding and Quality Assurance, Hackney)
  • Phil Chiza (Development Manager for Race, Adult Social Care) and Antonia Ogundayisi (Service Manager Anti-racist Practice, Essex)

10:00-12:00, 13 March 2024

In this session practice leaders in Hackney will present their work on embedding anti-racist supervision: making the case that effective supervision must provide an opportunity for participants to explore the impact of racial dynamics.

This session will be facilitated by:

  • Dr Godfred Boahen (Interim Head, Complex Care and Safeguarding - Adult Social Care), Jhanell Dyer and Monica Mathias (Service Managers, Hackney).
  • Please note: This session builds on previous input to the PSW Networks by Shabs Ahmed (Camden) and provides a further opportunity to consider the importance of promoting anti-racist supervision as a practice leader.

14:00-16:00, 1 May 2024

This session will be facilitated by Bryony Shannon and Tricia Nicoll from Social Care Futures. This session will give people the chance to explore the principles and practice of co-production. We will use the co-production sandwich as a starting point and think about what this means for your day-to-day work with people and families.

14:00-16:00, 10 June 2024

Professor Helen Bevan is Professor of Practice in Health and Care Improvement at Warwick Business School. Helen is founder (and now Strategic Advisor) of NHS Horizons which supports leaders globally who are engaged in system wide change for the organisation.

In this session, Helen will draw on her expertise in leading change transformation work within health and care systems to provide insights into how practice leaders can empower and influence others when leading change initiatives.

14:00-16:00, 17 September 2024

Carole Brookes (Independent Advisor and Director, Carole Brooks Associates) will focus on strategies for working with and influencing senior leaders in this reflective session. She will also prompt the group to consider how they exercise the role and responsibilities of a Principal Social Worker in relation to:

  • being an authentic leader
  • communicating with and influencing senior management teams
  • having courageous conversations
  • picking your battles and dealing with conflict

The session will also provide space for the group to review and reflect on key learning points from this series of six CPD sessions.
