Effective and compassionate practice in pre-birth work

Join a workshop that aims to support practitioners and practice leads working with parents during the pre-birth period where safeguarding concerns are present.

The separation of a baby from its mother at birth is hugely traumatic for parents. This decision can have significant lifelong consequences for both infant and parents.

Wherever it is safe to do so, families must be given meaningful and timely opportunities – and the right support – to make changes that could enable them to stay together. Where separation is necessary, it also considers what we can do in our practice to minimise trauma for all involved.

This workshop will focus on trauma-responsive, timely, and transparent practice. Participants will explore how compassionate, skilled engagement with parents can reduce the need for care proceedings and prevent the separation of babies from their families.
The session will highlight:
• The value of early support.
• How trauma impacts how parents present and respond
• How to build trusting, collaborative relationships with mothers and fathers.
• The role of the wider family and kinship network in supporting parents to keep their babies.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this session, participants will be able to:

- Recognise the perspectives of parents with lived experience of pre-birth assessment.

- Understand the importance of providing help and support early.
