Children, young people and families’ experiences of Children’s Social Care involvement in their lives: scoping how data is gathered
Children, young people and families’ experiences of Children’s Social Care involvement in their lives: scoping how data is gathered
Delivered online using Teams
12:30 - 14:00 Monday, 23 March 2026
Join an online knowledge exchange session that will discuss how data is gathered about the experiences of children, young people and families who are supported by Children’s Social Care (CSC).
The CSC national framework and dashboard set out the outcomes to which CSC activities are directed. Work on the framework has highlighted that there is limited data on the experiences of children, young people and families who are supported by children’s services in England.
The Department for Education has commissioned a feasibility study to explore how comparable data might be drawn together to build a representative, national picture of children, young people and families’ experiences with CSC in every local authority. Research in Practice is working with Ipsos to draw sector expertise into this study.
We know that locally, CSC uses various methods to enable children and young people to share their experiences. Coram’s Bright Spots Programme is one evidence-informed and highly valued example. Ofsted’s Children’s Social Care Questionnaires, and data available through The Good Childhood Report provide broad overviews.
The study seeks to explore what might be optimal methods for gathering the experiences of children and young people across a range of ages and intervention types. Meeting the challenges of ensuring any approaches is meaningful, ethical, proportionate and safe.
In this knowledge exchange session, we will ask about your views and experiences of what data is currently collected, and what the important considerations are to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and young people, and the usefulness and practical considerations of a national survey.
We would also like to hear:
- What methods do you use currently to seek children and young people’s feedback on their experiences of the CSC services they receive?
- What are the barriers/enablers experienced in gathering, drawing together and using these feedback data?
- Your perspective on the idea of a national survey approach?
- Any other ideas you might have about building a national picture beyond survey methods?
Designed for
PSWs and Heads of Service across Children’s Social Care, local data leads inputting to CSC dashboard, and child and young person participation leads.
