An introduction to the Innovate Project
The Innovate Project is a four-year UK study funded by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) which is exploring how social care and other safeguarding agencies are innovating to address harms that young people may encounter and experience beyond the family home (including online).

About the presenter
Michelle Lefevre is Professor of Social Work at the University of Sussex and Director of CIRCY – the Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth. Her research primarily focuses on professional practice with children, young people and families where there are issues of risk and harm, and it is rooted in her background as a child protection social worker and arts psychotherapist.

Transitions
For young people with social care needs, transitioning from childhood to adulthood can have added pressures and challenges. Social care practitioners and other professionals can support young people ‘transitioning' from one service to another or into independence.
Trauma-informed practice
A trauma can be defined as a physical or emotional experience that has had an adverse impact on an adult, child or young person’s wellbeing. The effects of trauma may not always be significant or long-lasting. However, for some the impact stays with them throughout the life course. Trauma-informed approaches should be strengths-based and require practitioners to have an understanding of, and responsiveness to, the causes and effects of trauma.
